Maintenance according to DIN 31 051

Maintenance is the general term for inspection, servicing and repair.

The term is structured as follows:
The totality of measures to maintain and restore the target condition as well as to determine and assess the actual condition of technical work equipment, systems and buildings.

Maintenance is divided into:

• Maintenance: Measures to maintain the target condition of technical equipment and systems to avoid disruptions to the production process. Example: Lubrication, cleaning, adjustment.

• Inspection: Measures to determine and assess the actual condition of buildings, systems and technical equipment to avoid disruptions to the production process. Example: Testing, measuring, assessing.

• Repair: Measures to restore the target condition of buildings, systems and technical equipment with preparation or replacement of parts according to inspection results. Example: Replacement, repair.
